Junior Club News

Keeping you up to date!

More on the junior’s first match - and what a match! Everyone can can be very proud of themselves in their play and application. A special shout out to Pablo who had to win his last game with just a few minutes on the clock and a dozen people watching - great character! Also to Dakshya who was certainly the youngest by some margin. Downend had a very strong team, particularly on the top boards but everyone put in a fantastic effort. 6-6! Well done!

Further matches and tournaments are being organised as we speak!

After a brief summer hiatus the junior club restarts on 8th September. During the school holidays some of our players have put in fantastic performances in the UK Megafinals and Gigafinals so should be sharp for our upcoming match against Downend Juniors on 14th September. We look forward to seeing you all again soon!

Last night four of our players competed in the early rounds of the Club Rapidplay (10mins). Emerald had a really tight battle in her game which was eventually agreed a draw! Meanwhile Alexandra was causing her opponent so many problems that he almost lost on time. Akira put in a fabulous performance in Round One against one of the club's top players and managed an excellent draw. He finished with 1.5/3! Walt was paired in the first round against one of the best players in the league and put up a stylish performance before the inevitable. Pablo also played in a couple of rounds against very strong opposition and demonstrated his enthusiasm in abundance! Next time round the adults will be very worried!

It's been drawn to our attention that there is a website calling itself Bristol Junior Chess - so to avoid confusion we are renaming the club - South Bristol Junior Chess Club!

Tonight a group of our children will be playing in the South Bristol Rapidplay! Watch this spot to find out how they get on!

With all our young players improving so rapidly we are looking to find opportunities for them to experience competitive play. As COVID restrictions relax a number of adult congresses are beginning to start up again. These are usually run in three sections: An Open Section in which the strongest players compete, A Major Section in which strong club players can compete and a Minor Section for players from beginners up to club standard players. Usually they are 5 rounds with one round on a Friday and two rounds on the Saturday and Sunday - you can take a bye in the first round and just play on the Saturday and Sunday. The time limit varies but typically each player will have 90 minutes on the clock.

29 April - 1 May.       Cornwall Spring Congress

13-15 May                 Frome Chess Congress

3-5 June.                    Cotswolds Chess Congress
